President Obama spent his holiday weekend in Palm Springs and it inspired me! If you haven’t considered a Palm Springs wedding, now is precisely the time to do so. You’ll see why it was considered old Hollywood’s winter getaway. The days are sunny and glorious and the evenings are cool and temperate: the perfect climate for the most important party you’ll ever throw!

There is something very unique about a Palm Springs wedding. Nestled in the Coachella Valley, it’s easy to feel secluded in this desert oasis. A look around reveals a dramatic, rocky landscape that can feel almost eery at times, as though you were visiting a space station on Mars. With only the warm wind in your ears, you are two hours from Los Angeles, but for all you know, you’re on an amazing Mid-Century Modern resort planet.

Upon further inspection, Palm Springs has a lot to offer! From the majestic to the kitschy, there are stunning historic hotels for every taste. I’ve selected these just to get you started:

THE WILLOWS-Once Millionaire William Mead’s opulent Mediterranean hideaway. Albert Einstein sunbathed in the nude here.

KORAKIA PENSIONE-Two restored Morroccan villas. Originally the Vacation homes of Scottish painter Gordon Coutts and J. Carol Naish, silent screen star. Winston Churchill painted in the artist’s studio. He was clothed at the time.

THE INGLESIDE INN-A two acre Spanish estate. Clark Gable and Carole Lombard honeymooned here. I’m going to go out on a limb here and say they were definitely nude at some point.

THE PARKER PALM SPRINGS-California’s very first Holiday Inn. Super 60s-70s retro funky. Previously owned by Gene Autry for the purpose of housing his baseball team while they were in training. Lots of nudity…and butt-slapping.

For hundreds of years, people have trekked out into the Coachella Valley to luxuriate in it’s natural mineral baths. When Hollywood started making that pilgrimage in the 1920’s, they came to Palm Springs to relax…and play! It’s classy, but has a tangible resort atmosphere that will only get as gritty as the soft sand between your toes. What a short trip for such a great escape!
