New Year’s Eve is for grown ups. The Black Friday bruises are fading, the presents have been opened, the presents have been returned, the fridge is brimming with leftovers and now it’s OUR turn to let loose, right? When Undercover arrived at Terranea resort’s New Year’s bash, we were informed that our audience would not consist of just one age group. Our response: “Awesome! We’re the best band in Los Angeles. We’ve got a huge song list with a wide variety of styles to choose from. Mixing it up is what Undercover does best. We’ll make New Year’s Eve 2015 for EVERYBODY.”

When the band hit the stage, our guests were already out there on the dance floor. They were chomping at the bit, and some were sucking on pacifiers. When our event coordinator said there would be several age groups, we didn’t think she meant single digits too! You see, the dance floor was filled with kids. LOTS of kids. Kids that were ready to boogie. We had to think fast. Children love to play, but they do not play around when it comes to entertainment. If they become bored, they’ll quickly find something else to do and that could lead to pandemonium. Our mini audience eyed us suspiciously as we hatched a plan. We opened with the newest Taylor Swift song and they went crazy-in a good way!  There were little girls in tutus pirouetting, ‘Tweens singing along to every lyric, and we could barely keep up with the deluge of high-fives from the boys. Now that we won them over, it was time to bring out the big guns. Our musicians mixed some Motown into the program and soon Mom, Dad, and even Grandma and Grandpa were all shaking a tail feather. We had ourselves a NYE all-ages spectacular!

As midnight approached, the whole crowd counted down together and watched in wonder as the ball fell in Time’s square. Couples shared New Year’s kisses, and then shared more kisses and hugs with their little ones. As everyone reached the second verse of Auld Lang Syne, it took on a slightly different meaning:

“We’ve run about the hillsides
And pulled the daisies fine,
But we’ve wandered many a weary foot
For times gone by.”

Usually when we sing Auld Lang Syne, we tip our party hats and clink our glasses to all of the joys and sorrows we experienced in the years we’ve left behind. That evening at Terranea, we watched the spontaneity of the kids become contagious as parents joined their children on the dance floor. Thanks to all of our New Year’s babies for reminding us how good it feels to “run about the hillsides” and “pull the daisies” despite our worldly troubles and weary feet. Extra special thanks to a young lady named Jasmine, who thanked the band after the party was over and politely let us know, “You guys are very talented.” From the mouths of babes, as they say.

Here’s to a wonderful 2015!
